China Wine Competition 2019 Announces Inaugural Awards

Meursault Clos du Cromin crowned as Wine Of The Year in inaugural results release.

The inaugural China Wine Competition which judges wines on quality, value, and packaging, has released its first set of awards in a much-anticipated announcement.  They reflect the diversity and dynamism of the Chinese wine market.

The judges awarded Wine Of The Year to the French classic Meursault Clos du Cromin 2017 by Ropiteau Frères who signature some of the finest Burgundy wines. Having been awarded 97 points, it just pipped other Double Gold Winners Abruzzo Pecorino and Von Buhl Rieslaner on 96 points to the Wine Of The Year.

The classics did not have it all their own way with Best Wine of the Year by Value awarded to Kamana Pinot Noir from New Zealand.

The unusual Abruzzo Pecorino from Italy made by regional wine producing stalwart Cantina Tollo scooped the Best Wine By Package.

Having first won both ‘Best Wine by Package’ and ‘Best in Show by Country’, Cantina Tollo, situated in the region of the same name, is awarded ‘Winery Of The Year’.

The China Wine Competition Gold Medal awards spread across wines from France, Australia, Italy, New Zealand, the USA demonstrating the diversity of the fast-growing Chinese wine market and the growing knowledge of the Chinese wine-drinking nation. 

The judges for the China Wine Competition are experts in the wine industry, and come from a variety of backgrounds including Sommeliers from some of the best hotels and restaurants in China, Masters of Wine, buyers from inside the industry who judge each of the China Wine Competition attributes of value, quality and packaging on a daily basis.

As well as winners and entrants from the classical and New World of winemaking there were less familiar contenders from across 28 different countries including Indonesia, Malta, and Uruguay. Awards are made for Best In Show By Country for Australia, France, Italy, United States, Portugal, New Zealand, as well as for Best In Show By Variety for Shiraz/Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay. Pinot Noir and Sauvignon. A full list is provided below.

The China Wine Competition has been developed by the global drinks industry authority Beverage Trade Network, which owns and runs beer, wine and spirits competitions on 3 continents, as well as leading trade shows and exhibitions.
